Unit 3: Series Book Clubs
At this point in the year, many kids in third grade are at a turning point in their
reading lives: they are often moving into texts that are increasingly complex
with characters who are more complicated. Because series books tend to use characters to hook kids, this is a perfect opportunity to up the ante of character work, knowing that this higher-level thinking is necessary in harder books. The children will have ample opportunity to practice this work in their book club groups. Once the children are grouped into various book clubs, we will teach them that one child can get the conversation started by sharing something exciting, important, or even confusing about a character, and then other members of the club can listen and extend their thoughts/ideas. Some of the conversation prompts that they will learn to use are as follows:
They also will continue to build upon note taking and writing about a character.

- “What in the text makes you say that?”
- “I thought that too because…”
- “Another example of that is…”
- “I thought something different because…”
- “I agree because…”
- “Wait. I’m confused. Are you saying….?”
- “Can you show me the part in the story where you got that idea?”
They also will continue to build upon note taking and writing about a character.
- Reading Unit 2: Following Characters Into Meaning (September)
This unit will inspire readers to think deeply about and to learn from their characters. Readers will develop their skills at predicting, envisioning and reading with fluency. We will also help readers to notice characters’ personality quirks and habits. Learning to infer so as to develop ideas about character traits, motivations and actions will also be a goal. - Reading Unit 1: Building A Reading Life
The reading curriculum in third grade will build upon what the children learned in the previous year. The children will continue to move up their reading levels of complex text through guided and independent practice. A goal for the students will be to move through the third grade band of complex text with solid fluency, accuracy and strong comprehension. In this unit, we will work on creating a culture in our classroom for readers to nurture their love of various texts. The children will also form tangible goals that they will work toward. In addition, increasing stamina, tackling challenging vocabulary words, note taking and summarizing are also goals that they will work on as well.
