Writing Unit 3-Realistic Fiction
From the very beginning of this unit, the children will see ideas for stories everywhere. Fiction writers get ideas by paying attention to the moments of their lives, letting everything around them provoke story ideas. They will learn that fiction writers record story ideas, not just whole stories. Fiction writers often derive their ideas from the true events or issues of their own lives. They will think about something that’s happened to them and ask, “How could that have gone differently?” We will teach the children that they can draw on this same strategy. They will think and jot about the tiny details and big issues of their lives and talk about how these might become stories and jotting about their ideas using a story mountain or timeline. In our previous writing unit, personal narratives, they learned to use dialogue, transitional words, details and other strategies that will carry over into our realistic fiction writing.
Writing Unit 2: Crafting True Stories -Personal Narratives
Writers will draw from their heart map to craft narrative stories. By focusing in on a small moment, they will write stories with detail, reflect on their work, increase their stamina coach other writers and select a piece to revise and publish. Throughout the unit, they will use their knowledge of grammar, word study and mechanics to produce a well-crafted narrative.
Writing Unit 1: Authoring A Writing Life
In this unit, the children will work toward writing a personal narrative. The launch of the third grade workshop will focus on establishing a well-managed and productive writing time that will help set the tone for the school year. We will help guide the children to invest once again in what will be a familiar genre for them from second grade. They will re-familiarize themselves with maintaining a writing notebook, sharing and using the writing process from brainstorming ideas to publishing.
