October
Our grammar study unit will nicely compliment our writing unit. The children will continue to use quotation marks when appropriate, recognize subject and verb agreement and use ellipses. We also will cover subjects and predicates in complete sentences. In word study, our focus will center around long vowels. We will also teach homophones and discuss the differences with their spelling and meaning.
September
Our grammar unit will continue to focus on identifying nouns, verbs and adjectives. We will also weave in adverbs and linking verb as well. Children will begin to learn about the structure of a paragraph and incorporate their knowledge into writing workshop. Word Study skills that have been taught over the past few weeks will continue through this unit. In addition, we will teach the vowel teams, r-controlled syllables, REVLOC and suffixes.

Words Their Way is a program that focuses on spelling patterns. In class, students are placed into groups to work on spelling patterns they are trying to master. Students practice their spelling patterns, in a variety of ways, throughout the week. Students are expected to master each week's sort.
Word Study Routines

Word Study sorts are completed over the course of 5 (letter) days. Each day of the sort follows the same specified routines, even though the words change after each completed rotation. At this time, we have 2 word study groups; students are grouped based on their developmental spelling needs.
Units of Study
The word study/grammar unit will begin with a review of the various sounds of all the alphabet letters, digraphs, blends, dictation, code words and word sort routines. In addition, the children will also be slowly introduced to several "toolkits" in which they can use to help with spelling accuracy. The first six weeks of school will help to establish the routine pattern of introducing new words, partner work, spelling strategies and using their spelling packet materials.
